Urban/Rural School Based Education Initiative
The WAC Forestry Program – in partnership with the New York City DEP and the USDA Forest Service – has developed a comprehensive approach to reaching teachers and students in the rural and urban communities that comprise the New York City Watershed.
Our Urban/Rural Education Initiative learning goals include understanding: 1) watershed form and function 2) the New York City water supply system 3) how healthy forests filter and protect the NYC water supply, and 4) the human dimensions of the NYC Watershed in the past, present, and future.
We maintain 3 core program areas:
1) Watershed Forestry Institute for Teachers – A summer institute that informs, inspires and equips teachers by immersing them in a hands-on exploration of New York City watershed forestry.
2) Watershed Forestry Educator Community of Practice – We celebrate and support our network of teachers by providing information, resources and ongoing trainings. Stay connected by signing up for our educational e-newsletter.
3) Watershed Forestry Bus Tour Program – A competitive matching grants program that helps plan and pay for 5 different types of watershed forestry themed educational tours in the NYC Watershed.
