WALTON, NY – Local farmers are invited to tour two neighboring dairy farms processing and bottling their own milk. On October 9th, the Watershed Agricultural Council, with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County, is offering a tour of two Columbia County businesses, Hawthorne Valley Farm and Ronnybrook Farm. Each
dairy markets their products in diverse ways including farmers markets, community supported agriculture programs and local distribution. The $10 registration includes the day’s transportation, tours and lunch.
The first stop is Hawthorne Valley Farm, situated on 400 acres in Harlemville. This farm produces yogurt, fresh and aged cheeses and fluid milk from its herd of 60 mixed-breed milkers. Participants will learn about the farm’s processing facility, direct marketing retail strategies and the New York State license to retail raw milk. Lunch featuring the farm’s products will be served at the Hawthorne Valley store.
Ronnybrook Farm, in nearby Ancramdale, produces fluid milk, yogurt, fresh cheeses, ice cream and butter from its Holstein herd. Participants will tour the multi-generation farm and its processing facility, and learn about Ronnybrook’s custom bottling approach and diverse product line.
The full-day event costs $10. Pre-registration is required by October 7th. Call Leslie Deysenroth at (607) 865-7090 or email ldeysenroth@nycwatershed.org. For more information on the event, visit www.purecatskills.com.
