November 2006
Walton, N.Y. - Over one hundred guests attending the Annual
Forestry Dinner hosted by The Watershed Agricultural Council
gathered to celebrate the recent accomplishments of its
partnership programs for landowners, which operate to promote
farm and forest viability while protecting water quality.
A Silent Auction at the November 3 event, held at Belleayre
Ski Mountain in Highmount, raised over $6,000 to benefit
WAC's Easement Program.
The Watershed Agricultural
Council's Forestry Program recently awarded nearly $15,000
to local wood manufacturers recovering from the June flooding
in several New York counties. Businesses that received the
emergency funding were Pomeroy Lumber, Inc. of Nineveh,
NY, a medium-sized, locally owned sawmill and Indian Country,
Inc., a manufacturer of panelized wood products that employs
92 people in Deposit.
The Watershed Forestry
Grants Initiative is supported by the USDA Forest Service
and is administered by WAC to assist eligible forest products
businesses in the New York City Watershed regions East and
West of the Hudson River. Since 2001, WAC's partnership
with local wood products firms has invested over $5 million
into projects that increase efficiency, promote occupational
safety, and improve marketing of local wood products. The
grants help support the region's wood-based economy that
strengthens rural communities, encourages forest stewardship,
and helps promote forestry as a preferred land use to protect
water quality in the New York City Watershed.
The grants program
emphasizes value-added production and low-quality/waste
wood utilization, but any wood-based business located in
or serving the geographic area of the Catskill/Delaware
and East-of-Hudson Watersheds in the New York City water
supply system is encouraged to inquire about submitting
an application.
Applications must
be received by Monday, January 15, 2007
or Friday,
June 15, 2007 at the Watershed
Agricultural Council, 33195 State Highway 10 Walton, NY
13856. Assistance with application development is available
by contacting (607) 865-7790 ext 112 or e-mailing info@nycwatershed.org.
