The Watershed Agricultural Council's Forestry Program is
soliciting grant applications for its USDA Forest Service-funded
Forestry Grants Initiative. Any local business that produces
value-added wood products (e.g. furniture, architectural
millwork, cabinetry, kiln-dried lumber, etc.) is eligible
to submit an application. Businesses using wood bi-products
or waste wood are also eligible for funding. Applying businesses
must be located in or serve the geographic area of the Catskill/Delaware
and East-of-Hudson Watersheds in the New York City water
supply system. Applications will also be accepted from businesses
that acquire a portion of their raw materials from sources
within the Watershed region.
Over the past three years, the Forestry Grants Initiative
has awarded $2 million to over 50 local wood products businesses
to increase efficiency, promote occupational safety, and
launch strategic marketing campaigns for wood products.
The vitality of the region's wood-based economy strengthens
the rural communities, fosters working landscapes, and helps
promote forestry as a preferred land use to protect water
quality in the New York City Watershed.
Assistance with application development is available by contacting
Collin Miller, Forestry Program Specialist, at (607) 865-7790.
Grant applications are available online at www.nycwatershed.org.
Applications must be received by Tuesday, February 15, 2005
at the Watershed Agricultural Council, 33195 State Highway
10 Walton, NY 13856. The Watershed Agricultural Council works
with farm and forest landowners in the New York City watershed
region to support the economic viability of agriculture and
forestry through water quality protection and land conservation.
Funding for its programs is provided by New York City Department
of Environmental Protection, federal and foundation sources. |
