Introduction
Forestry, logging and the solid wood manufacturing sector are collectively among the largest employers in the Catskill/Delaware Watershed region contributing over 1,500 jobs to the rural economy. The Forestry Program’s charter identifies the need to foster an improved business climate that provides financial and technical resources to the forest products industry in the watershed. Efforts are targeted to both primary and secondary wood manufacturers from larger plants as well as the many “mom and pop” operations throughout the region. Through partnerships with the NYS DEC, Catskill Watershed Corporation, SUNY-ESF, and the US Forest Service, program staff continues to support efficient processing, develop new business opportunities, and provide industry training to help sustainable forestry remain an integral part of the working landscape and an economically viable solution to watershed protection.
