For
loggers of the watershed, our education training programs promote
watershed protection and sustainable forestry through proper silvicultural
practices, the use of BMPs in forest access road construction,
First Aid and CPR, and chainsaw safety. Loggers who attend our
education sessions are recommended by us to landowners who plan
harvest operations on their watershed woodlots. The Watershed
Forestry Program and its partners have contributed to the development
of a New York State Best Management
Practices for Water Quality Field Guide.

The Watershed Forestry Program promotes complementary education in forest management planning for professional foresters and forestry consultants. The programs focus on specific water quality issues, prevention of erosion, stream bank management and riparian area stabilization. With watershed training and education, professional foresters can upgrade their skills and are then recommended to develop private land forestry management plans for watershed landowners. They are also eligible to update forest management plans already filed under the 480a forest tax law to meet the Watershed Forestry Programs standards for water quality protection.
A good forest management plan developed by a trained, professional forester, in tandem with landowner education, is a useful tool for the wise management of woodlots in the watershed. Landowners learn about their forest management options and are educated to make enlightened decisions about their land. The Watershed Forestry Program offers education sessions on forest taxation, forest health, forest road remediation, wildlife management and the production of non-timber products in woodlots.
A key component of the Watershed Forestry Programs education effort is a network of four demonstration and research sites called Model Forests. These living classrooms offer demonstration and education opportunities, and they are utilized in conjunction with all program activities for landowner, logger and professional forester training.
