Seasonal Forest Technician
Job Description:
The Watershed Agricultural Council’s Forestry Program is seeking to hire a seasonal Forest Technician for the summer of 2012. The seasonal Forest Technician will provide field support for incentive programs offered to landowners and loggers who are eligible to benefit from the Watershed Agricultural Council’s Forestry Programs in the Catskill/Delaware and Croton Watersheds of the New York City water supply system.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work in cooperation with WAC Forestry Program staff to conduct forest inventory on portions of the four demonstration forests in the WAC Model Forest Program. These forests are located in the Catskill/Lower Hudson region of New York. Inventory work will include the establishment of new “continuous forest inventory” (CFI) plots and resampling of existing CFI plots.
- All other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- B.S. or working toward degree in forestry, silviculture, ecology or related natural resources field;
- Excellent personal, written, and oral communication skills;
- General computer skills as well as knowledge of Geographic Information Systems;
- Knowledge of and experience with forest management practices, tree identification, forest inventory techniques, map, compass and GPS use;
- Preference will be given to candidates with field experience in forestry;
- Conditions of employment are a valid driver’s license and a dependable vehicle for which WAC will reimburse mileage incurred on the job based on current federal rates.
Reporting Relationships:
- Works under the direct supervision of the WAC Forestry Program Manager;
- Report bi-monthly to the Watershed Forestry Program Committee of the Watershed Agricultural Council.
